What are Paphiopedilum?
  • Paphiopedilum is a genus in the orchid family (Orchidaceae) of approximately 77 species.
  • The genus name Paphiopedilum is derived from the Greek Paphos, a city on the island of Cyprus, and pedilon, slipper.
  • Paphiopedilum (sometimes colloquially referred to as "Paphs") are considered highly collectible by growers due to the curious and unusual form of their flowers.
  • native to South China, India, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. The genus has been given its own subtribe, the Paphiopedilinae.

Paphiopedilum barbatum (P.Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia)
This species occurs at 200 to 1300 meters and rarely found in Sumatra. Each growth produces 5 to 8 oblong elliptic leaves that are light green and mottled dark green, each leaf measures 15cm long by 4cm broad.

This species can be found in Java, Borneo, Sulawesi and P.Malaysia, it occurs mainly as epiphytic and lithophytic and sometimes as terrestrial. A clumpy species with leaves up to 50cm long and 4.5cm broad. Each time it can have 1 - 4 Flowers measuring about 9 to 15cm broad.
